Stella Bugbee

Styles Editor, The New York Times

Under Bugbee’s leadership, The Cut became an authority for Millennial women thanks to its expanded coverage of politics, motherhood, health and careers.

Stella Bugbee

Stella Bugbee is the editor of The New York Times' Styles section, a role she has held since June 2021. She previously served as editor-in-chief and president of The Cut, New York magazine’s dedicated fashion and lifestyle publication.

Bugbee oversaw the editorial and visual content of The Cut's site, as well as business strategy in her new role as president, which was announced in June 2017. “Of one thing I’m certain: Stella is about to lead The Cut into a dazzling future,” New York magazine Editor-in-Chief Adam Moss said of her promotion. “She has been able to grow the brand without ever compromising quality or clarity. The worlds of The Cut are changing fast, and The Cut is changing with them.”

Expanding the content of the Cut from fashion and lifestyle, Bugbee led coverage of politics, feminism and gender issues — and it paid off; unique visitors to the site increased 39 percent between 2016 and 2017.

Having studied both writing and design at Parsons School of Design, she returned to teach design and typography for six years before becoming design director for Ogilvy & Mather. Bugbee was then associate creative director of fashion agency AR New York, as well as design director at Domino magazine.

Her design work, which has been sold internationally in stores like Opening Ceremony and Colette, has won her accolades from organisations such as the Type Directors Club, Art Directors Club and the Society of Publication Designers. She also sits of the board of the American Institute of Graphic Arts.

Bugbee lives in Brooklyn with her husband and three children.
