Sanjay Kapoor

Co-Founder & Managing Director, Genesis Luxury

One of India’s most established retail businessmen, he became a gateway figure into the market and has franchise agreements with Armani, Bottega Veneta, Jimmy Choo, Paul Smith and Coach, among others.

Sanjay Kapoor

Founder and managing director of Genesis Colors and Genesis Luxury, India’s only luxury retail conglomerate, Sanjay Kapoor oversees the operations of several Indian brands as well as holding exclusive distribution rights for international labels such as Jimmy Choo, Bottega Veneta and Armani. A co-founder of premium Indian sari brand Satya Paul, Kapoor established Genesis Colors in collaboration with Jyoti Narula and Puneet Nanda in 2001 to administer the brand's retail strategies, quickly adding to his portfolio with popular labels such as Bw!tch and Samsara.

Kapoor founded Genesis Luxury in 2008 as the international arm of Genesis Colors, becoming the first to introduce franchise opportunities for luxury brands in the Indian market and in 2009 the group expanded into joint ventures with Burberry and luxury Italian men’s brand Canali. In 2011 LVMH private equity fund L Capital Asia purchased a 25.5 percent stake in Genesis Luxury, followed by an additional 14 percent investment in 2012. In a surprise move in 2017, L Capital (now L Catterton since its 2016 merger with private equity venture Catterton) sold its entire 40 percent stake in Genesis Luxury to rival giant Reliance Brands.

A graduate of Shri Ram College of Commerce in New Delhi, Kapoor earned an MBA from the University of Rochester in New York before embarking on a finance career with Citibank in Singapore and India before turning to retail in the mid-1990’s.

Kapoor currently acts as an active member of several trade bodies including the Young Presidents Organisation (YPO) and The Indus Entrepreneurs (TIE).
