Richard Dickson

Chief Executive, Gap Inc.

After a successful run at Mattel, Gap Inc.’s CEO has started to inject new cultural energy to the company’s long stagnant flagship brand.

Richard Dickson

Richard Dickson is the chief executive at Gap Inc. He was appointed to this role in August 2023 after a successful run at Mattel, where he engineered the resurgence of Barbie, leading up to its 2023 blockbuster film. Under his leadership, Gap Inc. has embarked on a process of rejuvenation, marked by fresh marketing strategies, buzzy collaborations, and the hiring of Zac Posen to help inject new creative energy.

At Mattel, Dickson held significant roles including general manager and senior vice president of Barbie, and later, president and COO. His tenure at Mattel is celebrated for the successful recovery of the Barbie brand, restoring its status as a culturally relevant icon through innovative branding and strategic collaborations, as well as for his work on toy brands Hot Wheels and Fisher-Price. He also introduced the Mattel Playbook, a comprehensive brand-building approach that played a crucial role in Mattel's corporate transformation.

Early in his career, Dickson co-founded Gloss.com, a pioneering online retailer of high-end cosmetics, which was eventually acquired by Estée Lauder. Dickson then spent several years at Bloomingdale's before taking on key leadership roles at The Jones Group, where he revitalised numerous fashion labels and expanded global operations.

Since joining Gap Inc., Dickson has brought stability to the company’s portfolio of brands, which also includes Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta. In the first half of 2024, all four lines saw comparable sales, a metric of store success, increase for the first time in years. He revitalised Gap’s collaborations pipeline, dropping tie-ups with brands such as DÔEN, Palace and MadHappy. In early 2024, he tapped Zac Posen to be his creative counterpart in Gap Inc.’s turnaround, giving the former fashion prodigy a second chance in the industry.

“Richard is incredibly nurturing,” Posen told BoF in an interview in August 2024. In Dickson, he had met “the business partner that I had only ever dreamt of meeting in my life,” he added.

Gap Taps Reed Krakoff and John Demsey to Lead Push Into Accessories and Beauty

Gap Inc. said it plans to launch beauty at Old Navy this fall in 150 stores, including some in the form of shop-in-shops. Accessories will encompass handbags, jewellery and leather goods across its portfolio. But venturing into new categories will pose a risk for a retailer still in the early innings of a turnaround.
