Founder & Former Co-Editor-in-Chief, Paper Magazine

As co-founder of the trendsetting pop culture and art-influenced title, she has also authored several prominent fashion books.

Kim Hastreiter

Co-founder and former co-editor in chief of Paper, an independent pop-culture magazine based in New York, Kim Hastreiter is widely renowned for her ability to spot new talent, and for connecting young artists, designers and musicians. Moving to New York in 1976, the New Jersey native began her editorial career in the 1970’s as fashion editor and stylist for the SoHo News in downtown New York — a position sourced through eminent New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham .

On November 8, 2017, it was announced that Hastreiter and fellow co-founder David Hershkovits sold their stake in the company to a newly formed media group founded by  Tom Florio , Condé Nast publishing veteran and former chief executive of Advanstar Fashion Group, and  Drew Elliott , Paper’s chief creative officer. In December 2017, Hastreiter launched Kim Hastreiter Og Llc, a consultation firm. She also serves as an editor at Barcelona-based design magazine Apartamento.

In 1984, Kim launched Paper magazine in collaboration with good friend and former Soho News co-worker David Hershkovits. The magazine featured written content from local artists and friends and covered underground music, technology and fashion. A former student of the California Institute of Art, Kim’s keen interest in art, culture and emerging trends reflected heavily in the magazine and it quickly became renowned as an incubator for burgeoning young artists, designers and pop-starlets.

In 2014, Paper boasted a paid circulation of 125,000 and issued eight editions a year, while the website Papermag.com counted over 1.3 million unique visitors per month. Paper Publishing Inc has also branched out into event planning and public relations through Extra Extra, and provides consulting and business-to-business services to other brands. The company also hosts several Nightlife Award events in New York and Los Angeles.

Kim was awarded the Eugenia Sheppard Award for journalism by the CFDA in 2010, and has also published several books including "Geoffrey Beene, An American Fashion Rebel" and "20 Years of Style — The World According to Paper" in collaboration with David Hershkovits.
