Jonathan Newhouse

Chairman, Condé Nast International

As international head of his family’s publishing empire, he has grown its portfolio of titles and extended the Condé Nast brand into new businesses.

Jonathan Newhouse

The Chairman and former Chief Executive of Condé Nast International, Jonathan Newhouse has grown the international business of American media giant Condé Nast, owned by parent company Advance Publications.

Under Newhouse’s leadership, Condé Nast International grew its portfolio of international editions — including Vogue, Vanity Fair, GQ and Glamour — first in Western Europe and then in Asia and South America in the late 1990s and 2000s. In the early '90s, when Newhouse took over the international arm of the company, the number of magazines under its direction was 30. Today, there are approximately 125.

The company operates over 70 websites across international geographies. Newhouse has also spearheaded initiatives aimed at extending Condé Nast’s brands into categories beyond the company’s core media business, including a series of licensed restaurants and the Condé Nast College of Fashion in London. Condé Nast has also invested in companies such as Rent the Runway and Moda Operandi.

Newhouse was the Chief Executive of Condé Nast International before stepping down when Condé Nast merged its US and international arms to form a global company in 2018. Roger Lynch was named Condé Nast's first global CEO and Newhouse became Chairman of Condé Nast International’s board of directors.

After attending Yale University from 1970 to 1972, Newhouse started his career at Advance Publications as a newspaper reporter and editor before moving into magazines in 1980, with management roles at The New Yorker and Details.

A native New Yorker, Jonathan Newhouse has resided in London, where Condé Nast International is headquartered, since 1994. Newhouse is the cousin of Samuel I. Newhouse Jr., known as Si, whose father founded the company as a newspaper publisher in 1922. He is married to creative director, and fellow member of the BoF 500, Ronnie Cooke Newhouse.
