Jawara

Jawara Wauchope is an editorial hairstylist and the man behind the hair-dos of some of the most influential women in entertainment and arts. His knowledge and manipulation of different hair textures allows him to create gravity-defining structures, working with the likes of Solange and Cardi B .

Jawara was born in New York, but grew up in Jamaica until he was 10, where his family encouraged him to pursue his interest in hair styling. Jawara studied at Fashion Institute of Technology in New York — which he paid for by working as an assistant at a hair salon — and cosmetology at the Aveda Institute in New York. After graduating in 2009, Jawara had a short stint in fashion merchandising, but quickly went back to hair styling. Soon after graduation Jawara met Sam McKnight , who became his mentor and brought him onto his team.

After years of training with McKnight, Jawara became a freelance stylist in 2013. He now collaborates with photographers like Norman Jean Roy, Lacey and Oliver Hadlee Pearch . His work has appeared in the editorial pages of various Vogue editions, WSJ Magazine, i-D and Dazed. Jawara also styled the hair for the runway shows and campaigns of Calvin Klein , Chanel Beauty, Hermès and Off-White, among others.
