Giorgio Armani

1934 - 2025

The venerable Italian designer built a global empire around sleek tailoring and on-brand hospitality.

Giorgio Armani

Italian designer Giorgio Armani (1934–2025) boasted an illustrious career spanning five decades in the fashion industry. Since launching his namesake label in 1975, he oversaw the growth of his brand from a signature menswear line into a global luxury empire including Giorgio Armani Privé and Emporio Armani apparel lines alongside accessories, footwear, cosmetics, and home decor.

Armani remained the sole shareholder of Giorgio Armani S.p.A. until his death on 4 September 2025, aged 91. His passing marked the end of an era for one of the few leading Italian brands to remain entirely independent from international investment vehicles. At the time of his death, he oversaw a retail distribution chain of over 500 standalone stores worldwide. The celebrated designer was awarded a slew of industry accolades throughout his career, including the Award for Best International Designer and Lifetime Achievement Awards for menswear and for art and fashion from the CFDA, as well as a Rodeo Drive “Walk of Style” Award.

Prior to his career in design, Mr Armani initially pursued medicine at the University of Milan, leaving in 1953 to join the Italian army. Placed in an infirmary in Verona, Armani began to seek a different path, securing a position as a window dresser for La Rinascente, a prominent department store in Milan. He later served as a sales associate within the menswear department and, in the early 1960s, secured a menswear design role at Nino Cerruti.

In the late 1960s, Armani met Sergio Galeotti, who encouraged the young creative to establish his own design office in Milan in 1973. The duo formed Giorgio Armani S.p.A. and presented their inaugural collections in 1975. The designer quickly garnered industry attention for his deconstructed suit jackets; by 1976, the brand was stocked in Barneys New York. A fragrance licence followed in 1980, with affordable diffusion lines launched in 1981. In 2004, he signed a partnership with Dubai-based Emaar Properties PJSC to launch Armani-branded hotels and resorts.

The designer received several commendations from the Italian government, including the titles of Commendatore dell’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica and Grand’Ufficiale dell’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica. He was also awarded the French Légion d'Honneur in 2008 and held honorary doctorates from the Royal College of Art, Central Saint Martins, and the Accademia di Brera.

In 2016, to address long-standing questions regarding succession, Armani announced the formation of the Giorgio Armani Foundation. Following his death in late 2025, this foundation assumed its intended role as the ultimate arbiter of the company’s stability. Under a new eight-member board appointed on 1 December 2025, led by chief executive Giuseppe Marsocci and president Pantaleo Dell’Orco, the group is mandated to sell a 15 percent minority stake by March 2027 while ensuring the Foundation retains a minimum 30 percent stake to preserve the brand's creative independence.
