Dapper Dan
Designer
The underground Harlem couturier of the 1980s returned to prominence after a cultural appropriation scandal led Gucci to finance the rebirth of his business.

Daniel Day, known as Dapper Dan, is a Harlem couturier and a foundational architect of global streetwear. Once known as the “king of knock-offs” for his 1980s “logomania” designs, he has transitioned into a central figure of institutional luxury, serving as a bridge between hip-hop culture and the high-fashion establishment.
Born in Harlem, Day’s interest in fashion was sparked during a 1974 trip to Africa sponsored by an education programme at Columbia University. In 1982, he opened a 24-hour boutique on 125th Street, pioneering a made-to-order model that outfitted hip-hop icons like LL Cool J, Eric B. & Rakim and Floyd Mayweather. By reworking luxury monograms into oversized, urban silhouettes, he defined the aesthetic of the era. However, legal pressure from heritage houses led to a raid by Fendi and the closure of his store in 1992.
Dan returned to global prominence in 2017 following a cultural appropriation controversy involving Gucci. This led to a landmark partnership where the Italian house financed the 2018 opening of his invitation-only atelier on Lenox Avenue and appointed him to its Global Diversity Council. As of 2026, he remains a key board member for the Gucci Changemakers programme, advocating for structural equity within the luxury industry.
In recent years, Dan has expanded his influence through high-profile collaborations and cultural leadership. In February 2024, his ongoing partnership with Gap peaked with the launch of the “DAP GAP” western-inspired collection, which became a commercial sensation. In May 2025, his status as a fashion historian was formalised when he served on the Met Gala Host Committee for the exhibition “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” where he showcased the evolution of Black dandyism.
Beyond design, Dan has dedicated his recent years to mentorship. In June 2025, he launched “The Dream Connection” in partnership with SoHarlem, a pilot programme providing young entrepreneurs with direct access to his atelier. A biopic of his life, produced by Sony Pictures and written by Jerrod Carmichael, remains in development.
