Charlie Porter
Fashion Writer
The former Financial Times menswear critic sits on selection panels for Newgen and Fashion East.

A regular fixture at fashion weeks, Charlie Porter has become a leading voice in fashion, documenting the industry in his former title as menswear critic for the Financial Times.
Porter grew up in Peterborough, where his first published work appeared in the Peterborough Evening Telegraph. He went on to study a BA in philosophy at King's College London, during which time he spent a placement period at Vogue in 1995, where he attended shows by the likes of Alexander McQueen. Unable to afford his place on the fashion journalism MA at Central Saint Martins, Porter began his journalistic career for the Daily Express in the mid-1990s.
Porter became an arts editor at Esquire as well as writing about fashion under a pseudonym for The Face before he was appointed the deputy fashion editor at the The Guardian in 2000. During his time at The Guardian, Porter joined the handful of critics banned from certain fashion shows for writing such scathing reviews. Later serving tenures at GQ and Fantastic Man, Porter became a freelancer in 2012. Two years later, he was appointed menswear critic at the Financial Times, where he worked until October 2018.
Today, Porter holds a position on a selection of panels for both Newgen Men and Fashion East. Recently, he has also appeared in panels and conversation with designers Nasir Mazhar and James Long and is recurrently a guest on ShowStudio evaluating fashion shows.
