Celine Dion

In addition to her exceptional, ongoing career as a best-selling musician in the Francophone and English-speaking world, Celine Dion’s avid love for couture and outrageous outfits have made her an unexpected icon of fashion week street style.

Born to a large musical family in the small town of Charlemagne, Québec, Dion wrote her first song at the age of 12 and became a precociously talented teen performer before breaking into the Anglophone music world in 1990.

Seminal moments of Dion's career include: winning Eurovision in 1988; performing at the opening ceremonies of two Olympics; a successful Las Vegas residency starting in 2003 and spanning years; and collaborations with artists including Luciano Pavarotti, Barbra Streisand, the Bee Gees, Carole King and Sir George Martin. She also performed her chart-topping “The Power of Love” in front of then-President Bill Clinton and featured on the soundtrack of “Titanic” with the world-famous song “My Heart Will Go On.”

Outside of her work in the music industry, Dion has done much to establish herself in fashion. In 2017, she launched a namesake collection of bags, luggage and accessories, and in November 2018, collaborated with children’s wear brand NUNUNU to produce a line of gender-neutral minimalist kids’ clothing. Dion was also named a L’Oréal spokesperson in April 2019.

Most notable, however, is her status as a fashion icon and unofficial ambassador for haute couture, consolidated by her theatrical take on the Met Gala’s 2019 “Camp” theme to her avid appreciation for couturiers such as Valentino and Iris Van Herpen . Vanity Fair has in the past crowned Dion “the undisputed winner of Paris Fashion Week” thanks to her street style looks — styled by Sydney Lopez and Pepe Muñoz.

Dion has won over 100 awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Icon Award, The Canadian Arts & Fashion International Style Icon Award, 5 Grammys and was appointed one of France’s “Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur” for her merits and contributions to France.

Dion has three sons and was widowed when her husband René Angélil died of cancer in January 2016.

If Dior is classed as the apogee of Parisian sophistication, this particular offering was a more obtuse take on the legacy of the house. But in its easy appeal, it felt like a kind of ground zero.
