The First Lady fronts the August edition of Condé Nast’s fashion title wearing Oscar de la Renta, photographed by Annie Leibovitz and styled by Tonne Goodman, just six months after Vice President Kamala Harris covered the same magazine (albeit with more controversy about how she was depicted).

Dr. Jill Biden’s appearance revives a tradition of First Ladies appearing in Vogue that dates back to Helen Taft, wife of President William Howard Taft. The practice paused during the Trump administration, although former president Donald Trump’s wife Melania had already appeared on the magazine’s cover prior to his election, in 2005. Hillary Clinton was the first First Lady to appear on the cover of Vogue in 1998, and Michelle Obama fronted three covers during her husband’s administration.
