Edward Enninful’s Final British Vogue Cover Features 40 Former Cover Stars

Image shows 40 women of varying ages and ethnicities gathered before a white studio backdrop. All are dressed in black, white or a combination of the two, and are looking into the camera. The four women at the front are sitting on the floor, and the rest are behind, arranged in rows that increase in height, so that all 40 are visible. Above their heads, the Vogue logo in gold letters. The cover line reads: “Legendary! 40 Vogue icons, one epic shoot... the ultimate fashion issue.”

In his final issue as editor-in-chief of British Vogue, Edward Enninful chose to honour the women who have shaped the title’s history as well as his tenure at the publication.

The cover, which features 40 former cover stars was shot by Steven Meisel in December. It includes Naomi Campbell, Serena Williams, Victoria Beckham, Oprah Winfrey, Cindy Crawford, Jane Fonda, Miley Cyrus, Kate Moss, Karlie Kloss, Jameela Jamil, Gigi Hadid, Gemma Chan, Selma Blair and more. Guido Palau and Pat McGrath led a team of hair and makeup professionals who were tasked with readying the 40 cover stars for the photoshoot.

Parent company Condé Nast announced in June 2023 that Enninful would step away from his dual role as European editorial director of Vogue and editor-in-chief of British Vogue after over six years. Enninful will assume the role of global creative and cultural advisor at Vogue.

During his tenure at British Vogue, Enninful’s touch was characterised by a mix of glamorous, cultural and political coverage that had a strong resonance with readers beyond the UK.

”As I step into my new role, I’m determined to keep championing the incredible array of voices in fashion and media, and ensure we keep the energy explosion of the last few years going,” Enninful said in a statement.

Enninful will be succeeded by Chioma Nnadi, who will make history as the first Black woman to lead the publication as head of editorial content.
