The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced on Monday that its next major exhibition will open on Sept. 18 and focus its theme on American fashion. As part of the exhibition’s opening, the Met Gala will also return as a smaller event on Sept. 13, “timed to coincide with the close of what will hopefully be an in-person New York Fashion Week,” according to Vogue.

Last year, the glitzy fundraiser for the Costume Institute, which Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour has turned into a “Super Bowl of Fashion” over the last several decades, was cancelled due to the pandemic. The museum plans to return to its regular May schedule for the gala in 2022. Next year, the benefit will mark the opening of an expanded exhibition, also focused on American fashion.

”The American fashion community has been supporting us for 75 years, really since the beginning of the Costume Institute, so I wanted to acknowledge its support, and also to celebrate and reflect upon American fashion,” said curator Andrew Bolton in an interview with Vogue.
