The award was presented to Ahluwalia during a virtual ceremony by the Countess of Wessex in recognition of the designer’s sustainable sourcing and manufacturing practices as well as her commitment to telling the stories of the communities and garment workers she collaborates with.

Founded in 2018, Ahluwalia uses dead stock and repurposed vintage materials to create garments inspired by her Nigerian and Indian heritages. Her namesake label was named part of the British Fashion Council’s NewGen initiative in 2019/2020. Ahluwalia was also named one of the eight brands to win the LVMH Prize in 2020.

First presented to Richard Quinn in 2018, the Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design is awarded annually to young designers striving to make the fashion industry more sustainable and inclusive. Previous winners also include Bethany Williams in 2019 and Rosh Mahtani in 2020.
