Holly Thaggard, the founder of cult-suncare label Supergoop is stepping down from her role as chairwoman and will assume the position of “strategic advisor,” according to an internal company note posted on Reddit.

“While she is stepping away from day-to-day governance, Holly will continue to be a champion of Supergoop,” Lisa Sequino, the brand’s chief executive, wrote in the note. “This transition reflects the strength of our foundation and our readiness to scale to even greater heights.” It’s unclear when the transition will take place, or who her successor will be. The brand did not return requests for comment.

Thaggard founded Supergoop in 2005, revolutionising the suncare category by marketing sunscreen as a beauty product, transforming a space long dominated by legacy players. In 2021, investment firm Blackstone acquired a majority stake in the business with goals of expanding distribution in Europe and China. The brand was then valued between $600 and $700 million.

As of 2023, the brand is present in 20 markets and has expanded further into the suncare category, launching tinted moisturisers, lip balms and setting powders. The business is “more focused than ever on accelerating growth, expanding [its] global reach and deepening [its] impact,” the note continued.

Thaggard will be pursuing “new ventures and spending more time with her family” in this next chapter of the business.
