Prestige cosmetics label Makeup by Mario has appointed Melissa Sperau to the role of global president, the company announced on Wednesday.

Sperau was most recently president of Shiseido US, where she oversaw brands including Nars, Clé de Peau Beauté, and the Shiseido namesake line of skincare and cosmetics. Prior to joining Shiseido, Sperau worked at MAC Cosmetics for 19 years.

Makeup by Mario was founded in 2020 by the celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic, and has become popular for its range of eye, complexion and lip products, which are sold direct-to-consumer and through retail partner Sephora. Dedivanovic leads the company as chief executive; Sperau will report to him.

“[Sperau] joins us at an important moment as we continue to scale the business while staying deeply rooted in our values,” said Dedivanovic in an email.
