Job in Focus: Senior Director - Category Strategy

Interviewee: Avaneesh Gupta, VP, head of sourcing strategy at Gap Inc.

What advice can you share for the interview process?

AG: During Covid, it’s likely that conversations will be virtual. However, expect to engage with several cross functional leaders to get a taste of our inclusive working culture. We have a robust pre-screening process that reviews talent through a leadership lens that focuses on capabilities and experience related to complex transformation and change management.

What makes applicants stand out from their competitors?

AG: Be prepared to demonstrate your passion towards fashion, the planet, the customer and our communities. Share your experiences of leadership and problem-solving that impact not only the present, but also the future within and beyond your own functional area. We’re looking for talent who embrace a customer-curious mindset, with deep understanding of [the customer] needs that drive the decisions.

What is the most important aspect of the role?

AG: As we enter into an era of greater volatility, there is an urgent need to reconfigure our supply chain and build a more resilient demand-led sourcing strategy. Collaboration is key – it’s what drives our countless sourcing relationships within the company and across a complex network of vendors, mills and business partners. For an organisation of [our] scale, the task to reshape our supply chain is enormous. A clear strategic oversight is more important than ever before.
