THE CHEAT SHEET
Italian Brands at Turning Points in Milan

- Milan Fashion Week runs Sept. 17-23
- Versace, now owned by Capri Holdings, is rumoured to be staging a massive show on Sept. 20
- Fendi will stage its first show without Karl Lagerfeld's creative input on Sept. 19; Gucci, which is experiencing slowing growth, shows on Sept. 22
The Bottom Line: Now that Gucci's growth rate has come back to earth, Versace and other brands are no doubt plotting how to replicate the Kering house's success. Milan and Paris may be where those seeds are planted.

Can H&M Maintain Recent Momentum?

Source: HM
- H&M gives an update on third-quarter sales on Sept. 16
- In June, H&M said sales jumped 12 percent that month, more than expected
- Last week, Zara owner Inditex reported strong sales but lower-than-expected margins, indicating discounting remains an issue for fast-fashion brands
The Bottom Line: Part of the equation is right-sizing the brand's store footprint as more commerce moves online. H&M has closed some underperforming locations and reduced its planned store openings so it can increase its investment in e-commerce.
A Different Kind of Culture War

Kering will hold tours of Balenciaga's headquarters during European Heritage Days | Source: Instagram/@kering
- Kering is staging tours and exhibitions during European Heritage Days from Sept. 21-22
- LVMH and Kering are engaging more frequently in brand-building at the corporate level, often via cultural events
- The Pinault family, which controls Kering, donated €100 million toward Notre Dame repairs; hours later, LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault followed with a €200 million donation
The Bottom Line: The rivalry extends well beyond the world of culture, with Kering and LVMH taking separate paths on addressing their brands' environmental impact. There, the lack of unity has real-world consequences.
