Balmain has named Antonin Tron its new creative director, succeeding Olivier Rousteing who parted ways with the Mayhoola-backed French fashion house last week after 14 years in the role. The appointment is the latest in an unprecedented wave of designer turnover at Europe’s luxury fashion houses amid a sharp downturn in consumer demand.

Tron, who earned industry recognition for his Paris-based label Atlein, will pause work on the brand to focus exclusively on Balmain. The designer will present his first collection for the 80-year-old house in Paris in March.

“Antonin’s approach to design, rooted in the art of draping and the physicality of fabric, marks a continuation of Pierre Balmain’s foundational belief that ‘dressmaking is the architecture of movement,’ said Balmain chief executive Matteo Sgarbossa in a statement. “Like Balmain, Antonin sees fashion as a spatial art, building around the human form with precision and emotion. Antonin will build on the house’s heritage of creativity, craftsmanship, elegance, and profound human values.”

Tron, 41, has big shoes to fill. Rousteing was the first Black creative director to work at a major European fashion house when he was appointed at Balmain back in 2011. During his tenure, he redefined Balmain’s image with his signature military-inspired aesthetic and the creation of the “Balmain Army” — a social media-savvy collective of celebrity muses including Kim Kardashian, Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner — helping to significantly grow awareness and sales.

“I wish to express my gratitude to Olivier Rousteing for building Balmain into the global brand it is today,” Tron said. “Balmain has a truly inspiring history. At its heart, the house embodies savoir-faire, culture, sensuality and elegance — fashion that is radiant, precise and bold.”

Tron studied fashion at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. He has worked in the design teams of Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Balenciaga and, most recently, Saint Laurent.
